Neuropalliative care and ALS

The GIM Division is special because of its faculty and staff. I am inspired by the expertise and accomplishments of my colleagues as well as their compassion and dedication to the community and students.

Bio

I am the Medical Director of the Palliative Care Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Palliative Care in the Departments of Medicine and Neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.  I developed the specialty palliative care program in the Johns Hopkins Center for Specialty ALS Care.

After Internal Medicine Residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, I joined the palliative care faculty at the University of Virginia in 2016 where I was also Medical Director of the UVA/Hospice of the Piedmont Inpatient Hospice Unit. In 2018, I joined the palliative care faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, where I initiated the embedded specialty palliative care program in their multidisciplinary ALS Clinic.

I lead multiple studies as part of the ALS Clinical Trials Unit and have published numerous studies in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals on increasing access to specialty palliative care including education for neurologists and improving quality of life for people with neurological illnesses, specifically those living with ALS.

I have received awards for education including the 2020 UCLA Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Faculty Award Excellence in Education Award and the 2022 Inaugural International Neuropalliative Care Society (INPCS) Tara Cook Award for Innovation in Neuropalliative Education.  I am a content expert for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Roon, and Northeast ALS Consortium.

I currently co-chair the Northeast ALS Consortium Palliative Subcommittee, co-lead the INPCS ALS Working Group, and am an ALS Association Care Services Committee member. I am an Associate Editor of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, the official journal of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). I am the past Chair of the INPCS Strategic Communications Committee and the AAHPM Neuropalliative Special Interest Group.
